Changing Mines For Sun

lourdes segade

Puertollano, a town in Ciudad Real, Spain, was a prosperous mining area that has, nowadays, turned its business to the solar industry. The only remaining coal mine in the area, the Encasur one, has a 2 km x 2,5 km surface being exploited. On the other hand, several solar gardens have 'grown' all around the area, each of them showing modules and pannels built with different technologies. Other clean energies are too being developed in Puertollano, such as the Combined Cycle Thermal Power.

Coal washing place within the Encasur mine in Puertollano, the only remaining coal mine in the area. The surface in exploitation is 2 km x 2,5 km even though recent and abundant rains have created a concentration of water in the center of the mine, below which there are 15 meters that should be in exploitation too and that can't be worked nowadays.

Eusebio Sáez Mozos, 78, is a farmer from El Villar, in the outskirts of Puertollano. He owned a piece of land that he sold to "someone who came to me and asked me to sell my land, four years ago". Renovalia was the company who bought Eusebio's and other people's lands and there they installed a solar garden. The photovoltaic modules have been made from silicon by a company in Puertollano. Eusebio cannot avoid to cry when he recalls the times when he and his father and family farmed that lands. "I had only come once, but it wasn't finished", he says and adds that "i can barely believe that this is not anymore a farming land, but at the same time I think this is good for the town since it is bringing work". Eusebio's son Maximo is a miner in Encasur coal mine in Puertollano.

Small solar garden in the outskirts of Puertollano. Small pieces of land were sold by local farmers and then solar panels were installed there, in sites that were formerly used by mining industry. At the back (right) still one gallery with conveyor belts inside transports coal to be washed. Coal in Puertollano has 40% of impurity and therefore it needs to be washed.
