JUST A MOMMY. Motherhood And Disability

Lourdes Segade

Even though her child’s father left her when she became pregnant, Lorena carried on with motherhood. She delivered the baby and returned to her father's home. Her independence was impossible with a disability allowance of only 300 euros a month. According to the WHO, of the 600 million disabled people in the world, 250 million are women. Approximately 75% of those women live in developing countries. In Spain 9% of the total population are disabled. 58% of them are women. But very few studies or statistics on disabled women exist; and none of them focus on motherhood and disability. Disabled women are often seen as fallen women: they do not fit the prevailing expectations. It is as if they were denied the right to sexuality or even to a desirable body. They live with a permanent comparison to other women. It may afflict them and dissuade them from exercising their right to motherhood. But sometimes it makes them stronger and makes them even more determined. Lorena has some difficulties with certain daily routines, but her height and special physical conditions don't prevent her from leading a fairly normal life. The fact that Lorena's mother is achondroplasic too has helped her understand life better from her 126 centimeters. Though she does not like to admit her physical limitation and hates THAT WORD, her son Adrian (now 3) gets on well with his condition of DWARF with a freshness typical of kids but with the determination of more mature minds. "I can do it on my own", he says when someone wants to help him. He takes the most difficult paths to the highest slides, and reaches up to places reserved only for the bravest and most convinced, independent of his height. Accompanied by a stool when they cannot reach what they want, on the tips of their toes or in whatever way they can manage, Lorena and her family wrap Adrian up and provide him with the education, the love and the rules any other family would give a child, demonstrating – and proving – that the fact of being SMALL (as they call themselves) is not an obstacle to being normal people.
